The Shankin Chine was formed from water cutting through the sandstone cliffs that is 100ft wide and 280ft deep.
Chine is a local saxon word meaning "deep narrow ravine" and was created over 10,000 years. It was popular with smugglers and it is reputed a tunnel goes from the chine directly into the village.
The Sanklin Chine as over 150 types of forna, an aviary, the Chine lodge (heritage centre and tea room), fishermans cottage and nature trail. It's open to tourists from April to October.
